According to a study by the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), around 5.8 billion tampons were used worldwide in 2018, most of which were wrapped in plastic. This plastic often ends up in the environment and can have harmful effects on ecosystems. Period underwear offers a plastic-free alternative.

Ecological footprint

A 2020 study that examined the environmental footprint of period products found that reusable products, such as period underwear, have a carbon footprint that is approximately 40% to 90% lower than disposable products. This is due to reduced resource use, longer lifespan and less waste.
